Short answer

How does Medicaid renewal work?

For most people, Medicaid is renewed once every 12 months, and your state must first try to renew you with information it already has. If it cannot, it sends a renewal form and gives you at least 30 days to return it, with no in-person interview for income-based Medicaid. If coverage ends because the form did not come back, returning it within 90 days lets the state reconsider without a new application. (42 CFR 435.916)

Your state Medicaid agency decides eligibility. This page explains the rules; it is not legal advice. Benefit Bull is free and never applies or renews for you.

Renewal is the state checking that you still qualify. It is not a new application, and in many cases the state can finish it without asking you for anything. (42 CFR 435.916) The trouble starts when a form goes out, sits in a pile, and the date passes.

This guide walks through the federal rules every state follows, then the state details for Texas, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. Renewing Medicaid does not cost anything. Kentucky Medicaid, for example, says you will not be asked for payment to enroll or re-enroll in Medicaid or KCHIP, ever. (Kentucky KHBE, Medicaid Renewals)

Will my Medicaid renew automatically?

Benefit Bull graphic for step 1: Will my Medicaid renew automatically?
The state tries first with what it already knows.

Often, yes. Before it sends you anything to fill out, your state must try to renew your coverage using reliable information already in your case file or in the data sources it can check. (42 CFR 435.916)

If it renews you that way, it sends a notice with the decision and the reason. You only need to answer if something on that notice is wrong. If everything on it is accurate, you are not required to sign it or send it back. (42 CFR 435.916)

The move

Read every Medicaid notice the day it arrives. If the income, address, or household on it is wrong, report it using any way your state takes applications.

What if I get a renewal form in the mail?

Benefit Bull graphic for step 2: What if I get a renewal form in the mail?
At least 30 days to answer, counted from the date on the form.

If the state cannot renew you on its own, it must send a renewal form filled in with the information it already has. You get at least 30 days from the date of the form to respond, add anything missing, and sign it. You can send it back through any of the ways your state accepts applications. (42 CFR 435.916)

For income-based Medicaid, the state cannot make you come in for an interview as part of renewal, and it may ask only for the information it needs to renew you. (42 CFR 435.916)

The move

Return the form by the date printed on it, not the last day you think you have. Keep a copy, a screenshot of the online confirmation, or the mailing receipt.

What happens if I miss the renewal deadline?

Benefit Bull graphic for step 3: What happens if I miss the renewal deadline?
A missed date is often fixable for 90 days.

If your coverage ends because you did not return the form or the information asked for, you still have a window. If you send the renewal form within 90 days after the date coverage ended, the state must reconsider your eligibility without making you file a new application. A state can choose to allow longer than 90 days. (42 CFR 435.916)

Kentucky puts it this way: coverage can be reinstated if you missed your due date and are still eligible. (Kentucky KHBE, Medicaid Renewals) If the window has passed, you can apply again. You can apply for Medicaid and CHIP any time of year. (HealthCare.gov, Medicaid and CHIP)

The move

If your coverage just ended over paperwork, send the renewal form now and say on it or by phone that you are returning a late renewal. Do not wait for the next month.

Is Medicaid for age 65 and older or for a disability renewed the same way?

Benefit Bull graphic for step 4: Is Medicaid for age 65 and older or for a disability renewed the same way?
Similar, with a few differences. Follow your notice.

Mostly. Medicaid that is not based on the income-only (MAGI) rules, such as coverage based on age 65 or older, blindness, or a disability, must be renewed at least every 12 months. The state must still try to renew you first with information it already has, and it may use the same form process if it cannot. (42 CFR 435.916)

The 30 day form window, the no-interview rule, and the 90 day window are written for income-based Medicaid. For other kinds of Medicaid, rules can differ, so follow the dates on your notice. (42 CFR 435.916)

The move

Open every letter from your state Medicaid office and answer by the date it shows, even if you think nothing has changed.

What is changing in 2027?

Benefit Bull graphic for step 5: What is changing in 2027?
Some adults move from yearly to every 6 months.

A federal law passed in July 2025 requires states to renew Medicaid every 6 months for most adults in the Medicaid expansion group, starting with renewals scheduled on or after January 1, 2027. (Public Law 119-21, sec. 71107) Kentucky describes this group as adults 19 to 64 who qualify for Medicaid based only on income. (Kentucky KHBE, Changes Coming to Medicaid)

In Kentucky, if you enroll on or after January 1, 2027, you renew every six months. If you were already enrolled, you keep your 2027 renewal month, and after that renewal you move to six-month renewals. All other Kentucky Medicaid members stay on yearly renewal. (Kentucky KHBE, Changes Coming to Medicaid)

In Indiana, FSSA says HIP members renew every six months, and the state checks work hours every three months. (Indiana FSSA, HIP members FAQ) The hours rule is covered in Indiana HIP work requirements.

The move

Look up your renewal date now (kynect in Kentucky, the FSSA Benefits Portal in Indiana) and put it on your calendar, along with a reminder six months later.

What if I no longer qualify?

Benefit Bull graphic for step 6: What if I no longer qualify?
Before ending coverage, the state has to look at other options.

Before it decides you no longer qualify, the state must consider every other way you might be eligible for Medicaid. If you are not eligible, it must check whether you may qualify for other health coverage programs and pass your information along. (42 CFR 435.916)

Kentucky says that if you no longer qualify for Medicaid, you may be able to enroll in a qualified health plan through kynect with financial help for premiums and costs, and a licensed insurance agent can help at no cost to you. (Kentucky KHBE, Medicaid Renewals) For marketplace plans in other states, see ACA Open Enrollment 2027.

The move

If your notice says coverage is ending, read the section on other coverage before you do anything else, and note any deadline it gives.

How do you renew in Texas, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Massachusetts?

Where each state sends your renewal and how to answer it.
Medicaid renewal in five states (official state sources, checked October 23, 2026; Minnesota from DHS via research packet, October 17, 2026). Your notice has the exact dates for your case.
StateHow renewal worksHow to answer
Texas (HHSC)For the Texas Works health-care programs that renew this way, the system sends renewal mail in the ninth month of a 12 month certification period, with Form H1211, It's Time to Renew Your Health-Care Benefits. (Texas HHS, Texas Works Handbook B-120)Renewals must be signed and can be sent by mail, fax, phone, or the Your Texas Benefits website. (Texas HHS, Texas Works Handbook B-120) More: Texas Medicaid income limits.
Indiana (FSSA)HIP members renew every six months. Find your redetermination date in the FSSA Benefits Portal under Assistance Group; you will be notified if it changes. (Indiana FSSA, HIP members FAQ)Report through FSSABenefits.IN.gov, by phone to DFR at 1-800-403-0864, by mail to FSSA Document Center, PO Box 1810, Marion, IN 46952, or at a local DFR office. Certified Navigators help with Indiana Health Coverage Program applications at no cost. (Indiana FSSA, HIP members FAQ) More: Indiana Medicaid income limits.
Kentucky (DMS, kynect)Members renew once a year today, and you are notified when your renewal date is about 60 days away. (Kentucky KHBE, Medicaid Renewals) Six-month renewals start in 2027 for adults 19 to 64 who qualify based only on income. (Kentucky KHBE, Changes Coming to Medicaid)Check your renewal date and update your contact details in kynect at kynect.ky.gov or by calling (855) 459-6328. Free local help is available from a kynector. (Kentucky KHBE, Medicaid Renewals)
Minnesota (DHS)You are required to renew your Medical Assistance coverage annually. (Minnesota DHS, Medical Assistance)Follow the instructions and dates on your renewal notice from DHS or your county or Tribal agency.
Massachusetts (MassHealth)We have not yet verified MassHealth's renewal steps on an official page, so we do not describe them here.Follow the dates on your MassHealth notice. Income limits and how to apply: MassHealth income limits.

You submit your renewal yourself on the official site. Benefit Bull is free and never files for you.

The move

Pick one place to keep Medicaid mail, and update your address with your state the same week you move. A renewal form sent to an old address still counts against your deadline.

What this adds up to

Medicaid renewal comes down to three dates: the date on your renewal form (you have at least 30 days), the date your coverage would end, and the 90 days after that, when a late form can still be reconsidered without a new application. (42 CFR 435.916) Starting with renewals scheduled on or after January 1, 2027, most expansion adults will do this every 6 months instead of once a year. (Public Law 119-21, sec. 71107) Watch your mail, keep your contact details current, and answer every notice, even when nothing has changed. You renew yourself on the official state site; Benefit Bull walks you through it and never files for you.
