Short answer
What should you do if your SNAP was not deposited?
First confirm your deposit day: your state must set it, tell you, and deposit on or about the same day each month. (7 CFR 274.2) Texas deposits from the 1st to the 28th by your EDG number, Indiana from the 5th to the 23rd by the first letter of the cardholder's last name, and Kentucky within the first 19 days. (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250) (Indiana FSSA, SNAP) (921 KAR 3:045) If your day has passed, check your balance through the official EBT line or app, check whether your renewal was due, and then call your state SNAP office.
| Rule | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Federal | The state sets your availability date, tells you, and deposits on or about the same date each month | 7 CFR 274.2(d) |
| Federal gap limit | No more than 40 days between two monthly deposits once you have been on SNAP more than two full months | 7 CFR 274.2(d)(1) |
| Texas | 1st through 28th, by the last two digits of the SNAP EDG number; your day is on award letter TF0001 | Texas HHSC |
| Indiana | 5th through 23rd, by the first letter of the cardholder's last name | Indiana FSSA |
| Kentucky | Within the first 19 days of the month for ongoing cases | 921 KAR 3:045 |
| First month | The first deposit after approval does not have to fall on your regular day | 7 CFR 274.2(d) |

Your state SNAP agency issues benefits and decides your case. Benefit Bull is free, never applies for you, and never touches your benefits.
Most "late" SNAP is not late at all. States spread deposits across the month, so your neighbor's benefits can arrive on the 3rd while yours arrive on the 19th, and both are on time. Federal rules require your state to set your date and tell you what it is. (7 CFR 274.2)
When a deposit really is missing, the reason is usually on the case side: a renewal that was due, a report that was not received, or a change the state is processing. This guide helps you sort out which one, and who to call.
When are SNAP benefits deposited each month?

Federal rules leave the SNAP (food stamps) deposit schedule to each state, with guardrails. Your state agency must "establish an availability date for household access to their benefits and inform households of this date," and every household is placed on an issuance schedule "so that they receive their benefits on or about the same date each month." (7 CFR 274.2)
States may spread deposits across the whole month or a shorter window. When they do, they cannot let more than 40 days pass between two monthly deposits for a household that has been on SNAP longer than two full months in a row. (7 CFR 274.2) Ongoing benefits come in one deposit a month, except for a benefit correction or a few special cases. (7 CFR 274.2) SNAP has been paid only through EBT cards in every state since June 2004. (USDA FNA, SNAP EBT)
So the first question is never "is it late?" It is "what is my date?" Your state is required to tell you.
Find your approval notice or award letter and circle your deposit day. If you cannot find it, the state SNAP office can tell you.
When does SNAP come in Texas?

Texas deposits SNAP on the Lone Star Card once a month. "The day you get benefits is printed on your award letter (TF0001)." (Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ) The Texas Works Handbook says households get monthly benefits on a staggered basis from the 1st through the 28th, based on the last two digits of the EDG number: (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250)
| Last two digits of your SNAP EDG number | Deposit day of the month |
|---|---|
| 00-03 | 1st |
| 04-06 | 2nd |
| 07-10 | 3rd |
| 11-13 | 4th |
| 14-17 | 5th |
| 18-20 | 6th |
| 21-24 | 7th |
| 25-27 | 8th |
| 28-31 | 9th |
| 32-34 | 10th |
| 35-38 | 11th |
| 39-41 | 12th |
| 42-45 | 13th |
| 46-49 | 14th |
| 50-53 | 15th |
| 54-57 | 16th |
| 58-60 | 17th |
| 61-64 | 18th |
| 65-67 | 19th |
| 68-71 | 20th |
| 72-74 | 21st |
| 75-78 | 22nd |
| 79-81 | 23rd |
| 82-85 | 24th |
| 86-88 | 25th |
| 89-92 | 26th |
| 93-95 | 27th |
| 96-99 | 28th |
One exception: "SNAP households certified before May 1, 2023, keep their existing issuance schedule based on the date benefits were initially certified, unless there is a break in benefits of at least six months and the household reapplies after May 1, 2023." (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250) That is why the date on your award letter wins over this table.
Use the date on your TF0001 award letter. If the letter and this table disagree, the letter is the one that applies to your case.
When does SNAP come in Indiana?

Indiana deposits SNAP on the Hoosier Works card from the 5th through the 23rd, based on the first letter of the recipient's last name. "The recipient is the person whose name appears on the front of the Hoosier Works (EBT) card." (Indiana FSSA, SNAP) (Indiana FSSA, Hoosier Works Card FAQs)
| Last name starts with | Deposit day of the month |
|---|---|
| A, B | 5th |
| C, D | 7th |
| E, F, G | 9th |
| H, I | 11th |
| J, K, L | 13th |
| M, N | 15th |
| O, P, Q, R | 17th |
| S | 19th |
| T, U, V | 21st |
| W, X, Y, Z | 23rd |
Indiana's policy manual lists two exceptions to this schedule: households receiving their first month's benefits, and households that meet expedited criteria. (Indiana DFR Policy Manual 3600) For income limits and how to apply, see our Indiana SNAP income limits guide.
Go by the last name printed on the front of the card, not the name of whoever uses it most.
When does SNAP come in Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Minnesota?

Kentucky. By state regulation, an ongoing case has benefits "credited to the EBT account and available to the household within the first nineteen (19) days of the benefit month." (921 KAR 3:045) We did not find Kentucky's day-by-day chart on a current state page, so for your exact day, check your notice or call SNAP Call Services at 855-306-8959. (Kentucky CHFS, SNAP) See also our Kentucky SNAP income limits guide.
Massachusetts and Minnesota. We could not verify a current deposit schedule on either state's official site this month, so we are not listing one. The federal rule still applies: the state must set your date and tell you. (7 CFR 274.2) In Massachusetts, the DTA Assistance Line is 877-382-2363. (Mass.gov DTA, SNAP) Steps and contacts are in our Massachusetts SNAP guide and Minnesota SNAP guide.
In these three states, your notice and the state SNAP line are the reliable sources for your day. Be careful with websites that post a chart without a state source.
Why did your first deposit come on a different day?

The first deposit after approval follows different rules. Federally, "The date upon which a household receives its initial allotment after certification need not be the date that the household must receive its subsequent allotments." (7 CFR 274.2) A new household that is not on the 7 day expedited track must have benefits available no later than 30 calendar days after it applied. (7 CFR 274.2) For the 7 day track, see emergency food stamps.
- Texas: when your application is certified, regular SNAP benefits are credited by 8 a.m. Central time the next day, and priority issuances, such as expedited cases, within about an hour. (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250) If benefits are prorated at application, the partial month and the next month "may be issued as one deposit." Households certified more than 40 days before their scheduled date have an adjustment period until deposits line up with that date. (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250)
- Indiana: the first month's benefits and expedited benefits are exceptions to the letter schedule. (Indiana DFR Policy Manual 3600)
- Kentucky: for a new application started after the 15th and approved during the month, benefits are available the day after the approval is processed. (921 KAR 3:045)
Do not judge month two by month one. Your regular date starts once your case settles onto the schedule on your notice.
Your SNAP did not show up. What should you check?

- Confirm your date. Use your notice or the tables above. Texas deposits from the 1st to the 28th, Indiana from the 5th to the 23rd, and Kentucky within the first 19 days of the month. (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250) (Indiana FSSA, SNAP) (921 KAR 3:045)
- Check your balance the official way. Texas: the Your Texas Benefits app, YourTexasBenefits.com, or 800-777-7328. Texas says it does not support using other websites or apps to check your Lone Star Card balance. (Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ) Indiana: 877-768-5098, 24 hours a day, or connectebt.com. (Indiana FSSA, Hoosier Works Card FAQs)
- Check your renewal date. If your certification period ended, there is no deposit until your renewal is processed. The federal 40 day limit does not apply when something on the household's side, such as a missing report, interrupts benefits. (7 CFR 274.2) See SNAP recertification and what to do if SNAP stopped or was denied.
- Check your mail and online account for a notice. If the deposit came but is smaller, that is a different problem; see why your SNAP benefits went down.
- Call the state SNAP office. Indiana tells people to call FSSA at 800-403-0864 "If you are having difficulty understanding your benefits or determining why your benefits are not showing on your card." (Indiana FSSA, Hoosier Works Card FAQs) The next section lists each state's line.
If you disagree with a decision that stopped or cut your benefits, you can ask for a fair hearing. Indiana, for example, says: "If you disagree with any action affecting your eligibility or benefits, you may file an appeal." (Indiana FSSA, SNAP)
You submit any application or renewal yourself on the official site. Benefit Bull is free and never files for you.
Write down the date you checked, what the balance showed, and who you spoke to. That record helps if you need a correction or a hearing later.
Who do you call about a missing SNAP deposit?

Two different lines handle two different problems. The EBT line handles the card: balance, PIN, and lost or stolen cards. The SNAP office handles your case: approval, renewal, and why a deposit was not issued.
| State | Card and balance (EBT) | Your case (SNAP office) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | Lone Star Card Help Desk, 800-777-7328 | 2-1-1, or YourTexasBenefits.com | Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ |
| Indiana | EBT customer service, 877-768-5098, 24 hours a day | FSSA, 800-403-0864, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern | Indiana FSSA, Hoosier Works Card FAQs |
| Kentucky | Lost, stolen, or damaged card: 1-888-979-9949, 24 hours a day | SNAP Call Services, 855-306-8959 | Kentucky CHFS, SNAP |
| Massachusetts | See your card or our Massachusetts guide | DTA Assistance Line, 877-382-2363 | Mass.gov DTA, SNAP |
| Minnesota | See our Minnesota SNAP guide for official contacts | See our Minnesota SNAP guide for official contacts | n/a |
For any other state, the USDA SNAP State Directory lists each state agency. USDA also says it "does not have information on individual applications," so your state is the place to call about your case. (USDA FNA, SNAP State Directory) If you are not on SNAP yet, applying is free. One state puts it plainly: "You should never be asked to pay for help filling out an application. There is no charge." (NJ Human Services, NJ SNAP Ways to Apply)
Call the SNAP office for "why didn't it come" and the EBT line for "where did it go." Asking the right line saves a second call.
What if your benefits were deposited and then disappeared?

If your balance dropped and you did not spend it, act the same day. Report a lost or stolen card to your state's EBT line so the card is cancelled. (Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ) (Indiana FSSA, Hoosier Works Card FAQs) (Kentucky CHFS, SNAP)
- Texas: "If someone steals your benefits before you call us at 800-777-7328, you lose those benefits." (Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ)
- Indiana: "Stolen SNAP benefits cannot be replaced." Indiana lets you lock and unlock your card at connectebt.com. (Indiana FSSA, Hoosier Works Card FAQs)
- Kentucky: if a lost or stolen card is used and the account is reduced, the state does not replace the benefits. It replaces the card within 5 days. (921 KAR 3:045)
A store or system error is different. Under federal rules, the state must act on a household's request for an adjustment made within 90 calendar days of the error transaction, and has 10 business days to investigate and decide. (7 CFR 274.2) Texas also says you must report an account error within 90 days. (Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ) For skimming, card locks, and protecting your PIN, see What is an EBT card?.
Keep your receipts and check your balance soon after each deposit. You have 90 days to report a transaction error, and the sooner you report it, the better.

What this adds up to
Your SNAP deposit day comes from your state's schedule, and federal rules require the state to set it, tell you, and keep it about the same each month. (7 CFR 274.2) In Texas it runs from the 1st to the 28th by EDG number and is printed on your award letter; in Indiana it runs from the 5th to the 23rd by last name; in Kentucky ongoing cases are paid within the first 19 days. (Texas HHSC, Texas Works Handbook B-250) (Texas HHSC, Lone Star Card FAQ) (Indiana FSSA, SNAP) (921 KAR 3:045) The first month can land on a different day. If your day has passed, check your balance the official way, check your renewal date, look for a notice, and call the SNAP office. You submit any application or renewal yourself on the official site. Benefit Bull is free and never files for you. Questions about this guide: ben@benefitbull.com.
